"How to Create Adorable Yarn Gnomes: A Step-by-Step Craft Tutorial"

Writer's picture: Tara JoyTara Joy

Hello there and welcome or welcome back!! So, I know that where I'm from gnomes are all the rage. You see gnomes for just about every holiday and season. Today I'm going to "show" you how to create this precious gnome out of yarn and you won't believe the other supplies we use to make them! So, let's jump in to getting crafty!

Supplies needed:

Worsted Weight Yarn in any color that you love

Worsted Weight Yarn in white

Toilet Paper Roll (surprised?? So was I!)

A Piece of Cardstock that is 4-5 inches in height and 6-7 inches in width (I use those cards you get in the mail from time to time with the ads)

A needle with a large eye (I use a plastic canvas needle)

Wood bead for the nose

Instructions:

This is a super easy craft. First thing you're going to do is take your cardstock or card from the mail and fold it in half. Take your colored yarn and wrap it around the card a total of 50 times. Once it's been wrapped 50 times cut one end of the yarn to create strands of yarn that are mostly all the same size. I say mostly because sometimes they come out with a few shorter than the rest. Next, you're going to cut a piece of your toilet paper roll off that is about 2 inches wide. So, you should have a circle cut out from the roll. This is going to be the brim of your gnome's hat. Take your first strand of yarn and fold it in half creating a loop. Insert the yarn loop first into the center of your piece of toilet paper roll that you cut. Next take the two ends of the yarn and insert them through the yarn loop and pull tight making sure that it is around the ring that you made from the toilet paper roll. Continue to do this until the entire ring is filled with yarn.

Next, take your white yarn and just like you did with the colored yarn wrap it around the card or cardstock but this time you're going to wrap it 75 times.

Once you've wrapped it remove the whole bundle of yarn from the card. Do not cut it! Cut an additional piece of white yarn off the skein about 5 inches long and wrap and tie it around the center of the yarn bundle creating a bow. Next cut both end of the bundle so you no longer have loops. This is creating the beard for your gnome. As you're cutting it to make it straight continuously brush it downward with your hands. I left a step out (oops) before making your beard you want to go back to your hat that you created with your colored yarn and tie a piece of yarn around the strands to create a pom pom. Trim the pom pom up as needed. Now taking the long strands that you should have from tying the beard together thread those strands through your needle and thread the strands through the hat coming out in the center of your pom pom. Tie this to create a hanger. You should now have the beard placed inside the hat. I like to take a little dot of hot glue and apply it under the brim to ensure the beard stays in the hat. Finally attach your wood bead under the brim of the hat to create your nose. And there you have it a sweet little gnome! I like to hang mine on my Christmas tree.

If I'm being honest this was a really hard post to write because I was trying to make it very clear the instructions without being able to show you the steps so, please as always if you have any questions please reach out and I'm here to help!
